Chronically agoraphobic since the day his wife was murdered, Tommy Cowley finds himself terrorized by a gang of syringe-wielding feral children, who are intent on taking his baby daughter. Upon discovering the nightmarish truth surrounding these hooded children, he learns that to be free of his fears, he must finally face the demons of his past and enter the one place he fears the most - the abandoned tower block, known as the Citadel.

A well made and ocasionally scary psychological thriller, Citadel fails mostly for being overly long and taking the easy route half way. It had something interesting to say and I was expecting a more visceral, bleak and no-easy-answers kind of thing but it turns to cliché and starts to loose interest when it does so. The lead could've been a bit more likeable, but given the approach to his character, he has a pass. Fortunently the director can put some tense scenes rather well and shocking moments too and that saves the movie for the most part.

The more that fright-flick conventions take over, the more the movie's recognizable and resonant human fears are dulled.

Citadel is a solid enough horror thriller anchored by a strong lead performance and an earnest heart. The second and third acts could have used a polish to punch up some otherwise dull happenings, but the film remains another fine genre offering.

Citadel an Irish film directed by Ciaran Foy. Starring Aneurin Barnard, James Cosmo. Film centers around a young widower who is battling demons both actual and figurative. After witnessing a brutal attack on his pregnant wife by a band of marauding kids - Tommy (Aneurin Barnard) is left with paralyzing agoraphobia and a baby daughter he can barely relate to. He is trapped in an anonymous concrete desert where transport is scarce and utilities unreliable. Tommy gets introduced to an angry old priest (James Cosmo) who turns out to have a connection to the murderous minors. I's been really long since I have experience real sense of horror movie, Citadel has proved its intensity of where horror genre really should take the audience. It touches the core of the sentiments of the central character and the skins off his fear. Just a few characters and what a combined result of such plot. You hardly get stuff like this these days, especially when there is lack of intelligent filmmaking on horror genre.
