Young, idealistic, newly qualified Scottish doctor Andrew Manson arrives in Wales and takes his first job in a mining town, and begins to wonder at the persistent cough many of the miners have. When his attempts to prove its cause are thwarted, he moves to London. His new practice does poorly, but when a friend shows him how to make a lucrative practice from rich hypochondriacs, it will take a great shock to show him what the truth of being a doctor really is.

WOW seriously? No latest user reviews from anyone? The Citadel is a great moral fable about a doctor who starts as an assistant and then progresses to a high class hospital where they don't even treat ill people but just charging them astronomical amounts of money for not being sick. The hero doesn't realizes the real purpose of medicine until his best friend dies under the knife. After that he delivers a great speech about how doctors should cure the sick without worrying about their professional conduct and gives examples of great doctors of the past. There is something about doctors and the moral dilemmas they face that really attracts me. I always thought that these subject matters only work in TV series but The Citadel proves otherwise.

Great story. Robert Donat is excellent as a young doctor ready to face any challenge to make a difference. As he struggles and suffers he gives in to pressures to take the easy path in life, and trouble ensues. Ralph Richardson is great as the best friend and conscience. Love the scene in the beginning where they blew up the sewer for the greater good of the town.

This is such an inspiring and outstanding story, extremely well written, excellent direction. Robert Donat gives an amazing performance. The rest of the cast is great as well. Fine cinematography. A gem of a classic.
