Better Things (2008)

Gail's agoraphobia keeps her inside where she escapes into romance novels. She shares a house with her Nan, recently back from the hospital. Gradually, they both try to reach out to each other to break their isolation. Rob plunges further into his addiction as a way of numbing his heartbreak over the death of his girlfriend. In his stupor, he dreams of embracing her again. Mr & Mrs Gladwin are going through a shift in their 60 year relationship. Years of resentment and unspoken truths have built a barrier between them that Mrs Gladwin, in her abiding love, tries to erode in little gestures.

The film has a powerful, impressionistic style. Scenes are shot in suffocating, distorting close-up or at an equally stifling distance, revealing the sublime, indifferent landscape.

Or, "Bitter Things," as aimless people take drugs and stare into space.

Recreational drug-taking never looked so dour - its almost an hour in before anyone smiles. Grey-sodden autumnal skies, track-marked teens and lonely OAP's share screen time in a loosely interwoven stream of consciousness set in an indeterminate, strangely familiar small UK town. The overall effect is atmospheric and magnetic in parts, but I didn't find the use of amateur actors successful in this case, the lack of emotion meaning it will be quickly forgotten in my mind.

In a asyschetisto 90lepto which aspires to capture the weight of the human soul. Through human avatars, who depart have lost their way in the hard paths of life.

The young director fails to inject us under the skin of his plotless drama of overdoses and funerals, but he clearly has talent to burn.
