The original ridiculously depressing movie about powerful women falling victim to love.

Hepburn's great in this; Arzner deserves a little more respect.

At the time, Arzner's film was not well-received, but later, feminists and other critics reexamined the incoherent saga in terms of gender roles and singled out Hepburn's turn (her first starring role) as an aviatrix and her penchant for bizarre outfits.

the beginning is so slow, but after about fifteen or twenty minutes the story really picks up. i thought the ending was incredibly sad, but that's part of why i liked it. though i think it would have been better if it showed some of the characters' reactions instead of just ending right away.

The love affair is a little in your face in terms of delivery, but it's a gentle enough drama to enjoy with two big stars of the day.
