Charulata (1964)

In 1870s India, Charulata is an isolated, artistically inclined woman who sees little of her busy journalist husband, Bhupati. Realizing that his wife is alienated and unhappy, he convinces his cousin, Amal, to spend time with Charulata and nourish her creative impulses. Amal is a fledgling poet himself, and he and Charulata bond over their shared love of art.

This sense of urgency is enhanced by the flexible, inventive visual style Ray uses to evoke mixed or shifting feelings.

In Calcutta in the last decade of the nineteenth century, a wealthy man neglects his bored housewife due to his passion for his political newspaper; as a result she draws nearer to his brother in law who encourages her to write. Ray's own brand of family drama is a wonderfully gripping one also because of his ability of building up and atmosphere filled with drama and tension. The style is poetic and sophisticated and the underlying hints at poetry and art make this much more than a pretty film to look at, but a great film experience.

Ray recognizes the paradox that reformers are insulated from the people for whom they toil, but the movie is too stately and attenuated.

restrained, beautiful, emotional, elegant, funny and tender - just what you would expect from Ray really. Wonderful central performance from Madhabi Mukherjee. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic relationship between performer and camera, as well as the stillness.
