Charulata (1964)

In 1870s India, Charulata is an isolated, artistically inclined woman who sees little of her busy journalist husband, Bhupati. Realizing that his wife is alienated and unhappy, he convinces his cousin, Amal, to spend time with Charulata and nourish her creative impulses. Amal is a fledgling poet himself, and he and Charulata bond over their shared love of art.

What begins as a seemingly straightforward character study quickly develops into a scathing critique of the social hypocrisies of the Bengali Renaissance.

Somehow I never got into the film, it never engaged or entertained me. I think I actually felt like a bored wife or may be I should just catch it again.

There is a characteristic Ray scene - perhaps the characteristic Ray scene... two people, arriving at some moment of discovery about themselves, caught in an instant of absorbed silence.

A great romantic melodrama with an intriguingly ambiguous ending. I felt that some of the political undertones were lost on me, but the themes of loyalty and marital strife are powerful, and handled with Ray's usual delicacy and elegance. Beautifully shot with some really wonderful camera glides, and truly captivating performances.
