The Broadway Melody (1929)

The vaudeville act of Harriet and Queenie Mahoney comes to Broadway, where their friend Eddie Kerns needs them for his number in one of Francis Zanfield's shows. When Eddie meets Queenie, he soon falls in love with her—but she is already being courted by Jock Warriner, a member of New York high society. Queenie eventually recognizes that, to Jock, she is nothing more than a toy, and that Eddie is in love with her.

Great film for being one of the first talkies.

Sadly, this one hasn't aged well. Trite melodrama with creaky acting--with the exception of Bessie Love, who's a total pleasure to watch, and if you enjoy films from this period, I recommend you see it for her. (And the performances of the titular song pale in comparison to James Cagney's rendition in "Yankee Doodle Dandy.") However, if you rent the DVD version of the film, the short film "Dogway Melody" is included--and is freaking hilarious. You couldn't get away with a production like that given the current (and justified) state of animal rights activism. And you need to see a Boston terrier perform "Mammy" a la Al Jolson and chorus lines of raincoat-clad dogs. Yes, yes you do.

The main attraction for me was that it was one of the first sound films, and the first full length movie musical. How could I resist? The sound was too soft at some points and scratchy, but what can you expect? There were also parts it seems they didn't even use sound, it was odd with no soundtrack in the background and startled me. And they hadn't quite abandoned title cards yet...they kept announcing where the next scene was taking place. The acting was all ok except for Bessie Love...she was amazing! She had spunk, was funny, but one point quite sad. This part was wordless...and I'm sure silent film experience helped. You could just see the realization coming over her and the sadness coming into her eyes. And then she accepted it and did something self-sacrificing. I think I'm in love with the character and actress...but in a totally platonic way.

The acting wasn't very good in this movie. However, the film was great!
