Cavalcade (1933)

A cavalcade of English life from New Year's Eve 1899 until 1933 is seen through the eyes of well-to-do Londoners Jane and Robert Marryot. Amongst events touching their family are the Boer War, the death of Queen Victoria, the sinking of the Titanic, and the Great War.

Interesting period piece, especially if you are interested in early pre-code talkies. Unfortunately the story is a bit of a sprawl and it didn't make the transition from the stage well.

This is a difficult movie to give a certain number of stars too, simply because it ranges all over. The film is dripping with agenda but also has moments of lazy play adaptation. Yet on the flip side, the film is enhanced by great scenes of tragedy and humor and family. The central core of Brook and Wynyard should have been even more of a focus as they deal with the tragedies that befall them over a thirty year span. The film is very much aware of how hard and yet how exciting it was to be alive at the turn of the century; a century that at its onset was assaulted by conflict. It does live up to its name but the film is lost at times in its portrayal of a crazy world. When it gets it right, when its personal, and especially when Auld Lang Syne is being sung, the film strikes the right cord.

It's like "Boyhood" in that it tries to show the development of characters and the world around them over a long stretch of time, but unlike the former, "Cavalcade" does nothing to invest us in the characters and their world. It's a series of mostly unconnected events with little in the way of themes or atmosphere. Some of the performances are good, such as Merle Tottenham as a woman who laughs at others' misfortune, but it's mainly a pretty boring film.

Moving at a leisurely pace, Cavalacade is primarily of historical interest for everyone except Coward completists and hard-core Anglophiles.

I'm not sure if this film won due to politics or because the vote was split between better films, but there are at least one or two movies that were made in 1933 that are not only better known, but are just better movies overall. Seems to me that there are far too many films that were made in the first few decades of the 20th century that essentially take the audience on a history lesson that ends with the current year. This film just happened to loosely tie them together through a single family. And yet, at the end of the film, I failed to see a solid point, even though they tried to feed one to me. No real focus, no real impression.
