Russia, 1936: revolutionary hero Colonel Kotov is spending an idyllic summer in his dacha with his young wife and six-year-old daughter Nadia and other assorted family and friends. Things change dramatically with the unheralded arrival of Cousin Dmitri from Moscow, who charms the women and little Nadia with his games and pianistic bravura. But Kotov isn't fooled: this is the time of Stalin's repression, with telephone calls in the middle of the night spelling doom - and he knows that Dmitri isn't paying a social call...

Superb- an excellent advertisement for Russian film making which portrays the erratic and ultimately brutal Stalinist regime.

Beautiful account of Stalin's brutal regime during the thirties. The little fireball was a bit hokey, but the wonderful acting and storytelling made up for that bit of cheesiness.

I was astonished by this movie. Not when watching it, actually. But a few weeks after. I kept thinking about it every day. I just could not get rid of the scenes that were in my head. And that romance "Utomlyonnoe solnce" which can be heard throughout the film (by the way, written in 1937; originally it was Polish) is amazing!!! It is one of my favourite songs since now. Mikhalkov and Menshikov probably have their best performances (for those, who have not seen Menshikov in "Pokrvskie vorota"). And I am very sorry that Mr Ebert did not see those things the Academy have seen! I am really sorry for him!!! I would like to see a more dramatic, reasonable and professionally shot movie about pre-WWII years in Russia - I do not think personally there are any! It is a true masterpiece!

This movie introduced me to two greats of Russian films - director Nikita Mikhalkov, and actor Oleg Menshikov. It's a spell-binding tale of one family during Stalin's purges in the 30s. Beautiful locations and award deserving performances are just a small portion of what this film delivers. There is a sequel in the works.....let's hope it's as good as this one!
