Russia, 1936: revolutionary hero Colonel Kotov is spending an idyllic summer in his dacha with his young wife and six-year-old daughter Nadia and other assorted family and friends. Things change dramatically with the unheralded arrival of Cousin Dmitri from Moscow, who charms the women and little Nadia with his games and pianistic bravura. But Kotov isn't fooled: this is the time of Stalin's repression, with telephone calls in the middle of the night spelling doom - and he knows that Dmitri isn't paying a social call...

Another incredible film about life under Stalin by an incredible Russian filmaker (who also stars).

One of my all time favourite movies. Absolutely heartbreaking and terrifying. Tragic to the nth degree. (Only fitting though, since it is commenting on such an immensly tragic time in history.) The young girl who plays the daughter is enchanting, her performance with her father (actually her father in real life also) is so rare and true... almost as though the audience has snuck upon them by accident. Out of all the films on my list, this one touches my heart very deeply.

Russian film at its best. Mihalkov's daughter is wonderfully innocent and there's a lot going on in this film that you get only after watching it many times. A perfect summer night's film.

This is one of my favourite films. When the Colnoel was driven to his fate, and even beated humiliated in front of his community and people, he remained solid and gave Dimitri a strong look. Shortly Demitri whistled the song the colonel used to sing with his daughter, as if he informing him that his revenge will reach his daughter as well, here the colonel cried and weaped loudly. A very touching moment and acted to perfection by the actor/director Nikita Mikhalkov.
