If this movie is on, I cannot stop watching it. I don't know whether it is the fine acting, the theme, or the nihilism (it is certainly not the score, or the occasional hackneyed phrase a.k.a the last line of the film). But I watch, hoping that this time the doors will open. Hume Cronyn is terrific, as is Lancaster.

Probably the worst prison film I've ever seen. It's definitely showing its age. A boring movie that I found little interest in. (First and only viewing - 6/3/2016)

a great prison drama. burt lancaster does a great job playing a hardened criminal who's got no problem with killing snitches! a remarkable bleak and nihilistic vision by director jules dassin. interesting that the problems of this prison 62 years ago seem to be the same as now. i guess the penal system hasn't changed much...

Brute Force is an intense film. It is about a prisoner who plans to rebel against the chief guard. Burt Lancaster and Hume Cronyn give wonderful performances. The screenplay is well written. Jules Dassan did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama. Brute Force is a must see.

If you know you're in for real thick melodrama from the opening credits to the closing lines and you still go for it, then you're in for a perfectly constructed, gorgeously shot noir.
