Armored Car Robbery (1950)

While executing an armored car heist in Los Angeles, icy crook Dave Purvis shoots policeman Lt. Phillips before he and his cronies make off with the loot. Thinking he got away scot-free, Purvis collects his money-crazy mistress, Yvonne, then disposes of his partners and heads out of town. What Purvis doesn't know is that Phillips' partner, tough-as-nails Lt. Cordell, is wise to the criminal's plans and is closing in on his prey.

Solid hardboiled film noir from director Richard Fleischer. It does have its melodramatic moments, but it's tightly-plotted with great moody black and white photography and tough-talking characters. Good B-movie fun for noir fans.

Lean, mean and too the point. Armored Car Robbery skips along at a brisk 68 minutes and gives you everything you need and nothing you don't. As a far as heist films go, it's not the best, but for complete-ists its a must.

This was a double bill with Asphalt Jungle at the New Bev and I thought it was really good as well; nicely written and paced and quick from start to finish . . .

Before "The Narrow Margin", director Richard Fleischer and star Charles McGraw made this lightening quick (67-minutes) master class in cat-and-mouse noir, with McGraw's obsessive detective trailing the thief who killed his partner during the title heist. Filmed at RKO and in and around real L.A. locations.

An RKO b-movie crime thriller, but one that has pace and an easy to follow story.
