Having lived in Bombay during the '93 riots and bomb blasts, this movie holds special significance for me. It is a little over-dramatized, but for the most part accurately depicts just how crazy things got, with emotions running wild amongst both Hindus and Muslims. Also, the Hindu-Muslim marriage story is unfortunately still a big deal for many even in a city like Bombay.

I saw this when I was pretty young, and I couldn't grasp what the movie was about. Then I rewatched it a couple of years ago, and the social message blew me away. Mani Ratnam is rarely a disappointment.

I'm overwhelmed by Mani Ratnam. This is the second film I've seen of his political trilogy, and it seems like Danny Boyle has a lot to thank this director for. Manisha Koirala is a brilliant actress. I'm certain of this after seeing only two of her films, both with very distinctive roles. Surprisingly, she's a Nepali actress and studied documentary filmmaking. Anyway, if you want to watch a film about Hindu-Muslim tension and the suffering resulting from it in (now Mumbai of course), watch this. Though at times slightly unrealistic, the film is nonetheless thought-provoking.
