Salaam Bombay! (1988)

Young Krishna is abandoned at the Apollo Circus by his mother, who informs him that he can only return home when he can afford ₹500 for his brother's bicycle that he destroyed. The circus leaves Krishna behind and he travels to Bombay, where he delivers tee and befriends a heroin addict and a young prostitute. Krishna dreams of saving ₹500 to return home, but Bombay street life isn't easy.

Really amazing movie. I can't believe that it didnt win the Oscar while the sugar-coated Bollywood-ish Slumdog Millionaire did!

a cornerstone for the cinema of india, this is a gripping and realistic portrayal of the harsh life of bombay street kids. focusing on the topics of abandonment, underage prostitution and drug addiction, it focuses its energy at showing you that there are places in this world that are far from paradise. the acting is superb, especially since its star is a real life street kid. mira nair's storytelling is powerful, and her directing is fantastic. although at times, its slows its pace down, any approach is taken for the right reasons. this is not the happiest experience you will have watching a film, but its one that is true and real, leaving you with a touch of knowledge on how harsh the world can sometimes, if not often be.

The movie is terrifically well acted and beautifully filmed, however, marking an auspicious feature-film debut for Indian-American director Mira Nair.

one of the toughest movies i've ever seen. it kills me inside, to see all those adorable, children lonely, but they're so hardcore. ILOVETHEM. favorite scene: singing in the movie theatre. GREATEST thing ever. but the ending just breaks my heart.
