Isabella, a young model, is murdered by a mysterious masked figure at a fashion house in Rome. When her diary, which details the house employees' many vices, disappears, the masked killer begins killing off all the models in and around the house to find it.

While there would be better giallo films arriving in later years, the postmark on this one makes it essential viewing.

Visually, this may be one of the most stunning films you will ever see. The photography, framing, lighting and use of colour is unequalled in this genre of film making from this era. The fluidity of the camera-work is remarkable and repays repeated viewings to appreciate it fully. The only thing that may make this difficult going for some is the English dubbing so see it with subtitles if you can. The acting is not great and in some places will bring about laughter where it was not intended ditto the actions of some of the victims. The murders are gruesome and graphic even in the cut version of this film and must have been truly shocking to audiences in 1964. The excellent music score fits perfectly with the fashion house setting of the story and the models are beautiful.

I absolutely loved this movie. I am really wanting to get into more of the Giallo horrors, and this is probably the best of the very few I have seen. It's also the third Bava film I have seen, and I have really, really enjoyed all three. I'm really looking forward to seeking out more of his work. The killings in this film were surprisingly brutal and very well done, and the lighting, sets and make-up effects were all very cool. Just really loved this movie. Thank you so much, Jen. 8.5

A violent thriller filmed by Bava (Black Sunday, Black Sabbath). It is seen as the first "giallo" and is somewhat inspirational to the slasher genre as well. A series of murders of fashion models occur and police search for the masked killer. The killer is looking for a diary which documents the degeneracy inherent to the fashion industry. Beautiful women and pretty graphic killings fill this film. Very well shot, the camera is used very well to accentuate the characters thoughts and feelings, just too slow for my tastes.
