Isabella, a young model, is murdered by a mysterious masked figure at a fashion house in Rome. When her diary, which details the house employees' many vices, disappears, the masked killer begins killing off all the models in and around the house to find it.

Me acuerdo cuando puse el video cassette de Matador de Pedro Almodóvar, la primera imagen que me impactó fue el de una mujer ahogada. La toma estaba debajo del agua y se veía al cadáver con los ojos y la boca muy abiertas. Me traumó. Ahora descubro que esa imagen era de la película Seis Mujeres para un Asesino y aunque me impactó menos que Matador, me gustó más que este homenaje del español al cine giallo. La historia, los personajes, los crímenes... son de lo más exagerados y hasta chafas, pero todo eso más la estética kitsch pseudo elegante de la Italia de los 60 la hacen una divertida historia para pasar el rato. Alarido (Suspiria) me encantó por el uso del color para exacerbar el terror y el estilo. Fue una sorpresa ver que en "Seis mujeres para el asesino" esto ya se había usado. Me encantaron los maniquíes rojos.

Extremely stylish. Bava at his visual best. Lighting very similar to the best parts of Black Sabbath, only throughout the film. Also defined the Giallo at it's roots. It is a damn shame that there is not a good transfer of this film in print with English dubs or subs (the German release is no longer available, I don't think?) because this is a truly beautiful film to look at. Watching this for the third or fourth time tonight it really has become my absolute favorite giallo, probably even better than Profondo Rosso in my book.

Absolutely excellent camerawork and superb design make up for a somewhat boring plot in this thriller that inspired a million slasher films in its wake. Bava's use of the camera is amazing, as is his usage of the colors, which are super-saturated, making the whole thing seem somewhat surreal. I'd give it a higher score, but half the characters were people I cared little for, and in some parts, it drags on and on. That doesn't matter, really. When the murder is onscreen, you can't look away. Worth seeing, I suppose, for history.

Superbly vicious slasher movie that tosses more bodies that it actually slashes. Abortion, cocaine, epilepsy and extortion all factor into some thriller-esque subplot. But really its the heightened visual design the disturbs and frightens. Also, Bava secret door panels!

While Bava had already worked in the giallo genre with The Girl Who Knew Too Much,which was as much a parody as an actual giallo, Blood and Black Lace is often considered to be the first full-blown giallo and it does not disappoint. An interesting film as well since it marks a midpoint between Bava's gothic horror (Black Sunday, Black Sabbath, Kill, Baby, Kill, etc.) and his later more brutal films (Bay of Blood, Rabid Dogs, etc.). Black Lace features a classic giallo killer mysery set against Bava's signature gothic backgrounds, thus creating an atmospheric and brutal early entry in the genre. Bava pushes the limits of horror cinema at the time and presages many of the future developments in the genre.
