Isabella, a young model, is murdered by a mysterious masked figure at a fashion house in Rome. When her diary, which details the house employees' many vices, disappears, the masked killer begins killing off all the models in and around the house to find it.

MARIO BAVA IS BRILLIANT!!!! Blood And Black Lace is a hunting movie with an amazing story and also became the first real slasher film. Bright Wonderful colors, One of the most hunting killers ever and likely the most horrific movie of the 1960s! Has some flaws but still great movie!

A beautifully shot early giallo film. The killer is reminiscent of the (later) popular comic Watchmen character, Rorshach. The music is interesting and funky and go great with the collage of bright colors and fashion textures. Love the intro. Too many characters though. I was largely able to guess the killer, but the film is too short to really connect with any of the many, many characters you are supposed to get to know.

Blood and Black Lace is a freakin masterpeice! Mario Bava fills this film with vivid colors and beautiful sets. He was a perfectionist, and it shows. He not only handled the direction of the film, he also did the lighting and set designs. He is truly an underrated Director, and thats a big understatment. He influenced everyone from Dario Argento to Francis Ford Coppola. And his name should be mention along with names like Hitchcock, Welles, Coppola, Lynch and any other respected known film director. Blood and Black Lace is not the first Giallo film. But it is the film which kicked off the Giallo Boom in the 60's and 70's. Yet no other Giallo film it influenced matches the same quality Blood and Black Lace offers. Highly recommended to those who appreciate film as an art form. Its a breath taking film. As gorgeous as it is sleazy and sadistic.

Visually, this may be one of the most stunning films you will ever see. The photography, framing, lighting and use of colour is unequalled in this genre of film making from this era. The fluidity of the camera-work is remarkable and repays repeated viewings to appreciate it fully. The only thing that may make this difficult going for some is the English dubbing so see it with subtitles if you can. The acting is not great and in some places will bring about laughter where it was not intended ditto the actions of some of the victims. The murders are gruesome and graphic even in the cut version of this film and must have been truly shocking to audiences in 1964. The excellent music score fits perfectly with the fashion house setting of the story and the models are beautiful.

Mario Bava chooses style over substance in this fantastic giallo. There's not much to chew on plot wise. Black mail and drugs factor into a string of murders of people associated with a fashion salon. If you know Bava you know before even watching the film that it'll be full of stylish shots and kills, which this definitely was. It still seemed to be lacking a bit and I'm not sure if it was the lackluster story. It was a simple story and it worked well though. It was just very linear in terms of outcome in my opinion. Girl A would be killed which led to girl B and so and and so forth, but I guess sometimes that's how giallo works. Overall, if you like Bava and/or giallo films, give this is a watch. It's another landmark film from the man who did it before all others, Mario Bava.
