Isabella, a young model, is murdered by a mysterious masked figure at a fashion house in Rome. When her diary, which details the house employees' many vices, disappears, the masked killer begins killing off all the models in and around the house to find it.

This early giallo from Mario Bava is, as advertised, full of stunning set-pieces with candy-colored lighting, creative sets and camerawork -- but the misogyny and violence were too much for me (it's no wonder I've been skipping most slasher/horror films). You can see where Dario Argento found inspiration, but the plot here is wafer-thin (even with a couple of twists). Black Sunday and Black Sabbath are both better.

MARIO BAVA IS BRILLIANT!!!! Blood And Black Lace is a hunting movie with an amazing story and also became the first real slasher film. Bright Wonderful colors, One of the most hunting killers ever and likely the most horrific movie of the 1960s! Has some flaws but still great movie!

Looks beautiful as usual, I think I was expecting to like this alot more. It didn't disappoint, but it didn't blow me away like say Black Sabbath or Rabid Dogs did. Still in comparison to other Giallo this is perfection.

Stylish Mario Bava film that may be the first genuine body count horror film. A faceless killer is murdering fashion models in a series of gruesome and quite elaborate manners. There's no mistaking that this film is likely the first Giallo and set a precedent for that type of film, mixing graphic and stylized killings with sexuality. I think my only dig at the film is that it's all style over substance. The mystery and police investigation all seem rather dull and perfunctory, but Bava's vivic use of colors and his striking visuals are more than enough to carry the film. Cameron Mitchell and Eva Bartok are the starts of the film, but many of the voices were dubbed (uncredited) by Paul Frees for the American release of the film.

Visually, this may be one of the most stunning films you will ever see. The photography, framing, lighting and use of colour is unequalled in this genre of film making from this era. The fluidity of the camera-work is remarkable and repays repeated viewings to appreciate it fully. The only thing that may make this difficult going for some is the English dubbing so see it with subtitles if you can. The acting is not great and in some places will bring about laughter where it was not intended ditto the actions of some of the victims. The murders are gruesome and graphic even in the cut version of this film and must have been truly shocking to audiences in 1964. The excellent music score fits perfectly with the fashion house setting of the story and the models are beautiful.
