An interesting insight into a real-life problem of the Guarani-Kaiowá's struggle for survival.

Belatedly, "Birdwatchers" gathers some momentum: while it's transporting, and impeccably performed by a presumably untrained cast for much of its running time, this feels more like a good idea for a film - to hang out in one particular neck of the woods for a while, and see which scenes and images come to pass - than an especially compelling narrative in itself.

BirdWatchers just about manages to hold your interest, but it can't seem to decide whether it's a contemporary western or a retelling of Romeo and Juliet.

Rich Cline 17 Sep 2009

Beautifully shot and performed with the authenticity of a documentary, this involving drama has a lot to say about human progress in rural Brazil, although its off-handed story and slow pace might alienate some audiences.

ultimately a sad film depicting the erosion of the lives and culture of the Guarani-Kaiowà both through the actions of wealthy "land-owners" but also through a growing awareness of the teenage children wanting to explore Western culture.
