The Blue Angel (1930)

Prim professor Immanuel Rath finds some of his students ogling racy photos of cabaret performer Lola Lola and visits a local club, The Blue Angel, in an attempt to catch them there. However, his marriage to a coquette -- whose job is to entice men -- proves to be more difficult than Rath imagined.

This beautiful German film is impregnated with eroticism on the peak of which is ultra sexy Marlene Dietrich. Emil Jannings gives a very spectacular performance as a respectable professor turned clown. And, of course, the classic song.

A tale of shame, humiliation and destitution within the shades of German Expressionism. Also Dietrich's breakthrough film which made her an international star. A must- see.

The film is consistently engaging, in the mold of Greek tragedy--the foolishness of a man pursuing a whim, even to the loss of everything he had worked to build in his life. Dietrich's Lola was also an extremely interesting character, a woman who makes no secrets about who she is, and one we cannot dismiss because of it. She didn't trick Rath into anything, and in that she becomes somewhat sympathetic. And the closing shot was a brilliant choice, an expressive repetition from earlier in the film

Vieux film des années 30 à découvrir pour comprendre l'Allemagne de l'entre-deux-guerres et découvrir Marlene Dietrich, la chanteuse, ses chansons, sa voix, mais plus encore son charisme à la avant-Marilyn Monroe !

Sternberg is an early master on not only narrative, sound, but also....you guessed it, lighting..as befitting a German
