Often, Greenaway's handling of actors is his weakest point: but he gets fiercely intelligent performances here from Martin Freeman and Eva Birthistle as the artist and his wife Saskia.

it was a slow movie, which I found difficult to sit through. But the ideas explored in this movie were so intriguing that they kept me glued to my seat. It's not an easy or entertaining movie per se, and you'll need to know some background about Rembrandt and the Netherlands in the Golden Age to really 'get' the movie.
