Apart form all the other things Greenaway did right in Nightwatching check how he carefully reconstructs the painting's style and texture with the movie's lighting and multi-character scenes. Masterpiece!

Being poor in Western history knowledge, I really wonder how real are the things I see from the film - from behavior, social codes, ethics, to daily activities, use of language, living style, fashion, etc. ??? The film just looks a bit unrealistic, more like a modern theatre drama.

Often, Greenaway's handling of actors is his weakest point: but he gets fiercely intelligent performances here from Martin Freeman and Eva Birthistle as the artist and his wife Saskia.

Nothing much to see here folks, move along, move along! Greenaway normally offers up something that's worth sitting through but here there's little or none of his usual flourishes. I felt like I was being forced to watch an amateur theatre production with actors overegging purely because they knew they were in a Greenaway. It picks up in the second half but the chances are you will be asleep by then.

Although it was a bit late and I couldn't follow the complicated thread of the plot, made even more difficult to grasp by the fast and continuous dropping of names of characters you barely see, I loved every minute of this piece of theatrical play turned into a thrilling movie. Greeneway, you're one of the best.
