Peter Greenaway is a genius of a director and this is yet another tremendous film of his.

it was a slow movie, which I found difficult to sit through. But the ideas explored in this movie were so intriguing that they kept me glued to my seat. It's not an easy or entertaining movie per se, and you'll need to know some background about Rembrandt and the Netherlands in the Golden Age to really 'get' the movie.

Schitterend! Greenaways stijl is prachtig en eigenzinning; brengt een beetje theater in film. Waarom altijd die realistische manier van filmen? Zo saai en voorbijgestreefd! Greenaway die doet daar iets aan! Ga allen zien! Bovendien gaat het niet enkel om zijn stijl, het is bovendien een aangrijpend verhaal over liefde en een spannend moordmysterie! Alles in 1 film!

Freeman gives his all in a performance that deserves to belong in a good film. Unfortunately Greenaway's pretentious and indulgent Rembrandt fest is so bloody dull.

It's quite good. The aestethics, the light, the camera work are marvelous, as usual in Greenaway, but the plot is too spread around and it has about 30 min. too long.
