Big Time Adolescence (2020)

A seemingly bright and mostly innocent 16-year-old named Mo attempts to navigate high school under the guidance of his best friend Zeke, an unmotivated-yet-charismatic college dropout. Although Zeke genuinely cares about Mo, things start to go awry as he teaches Mo nontraditional life lessons in drug dealing, partying, and dating. Meanwhile, Mo's well-meaning dad tries to step in and take back the reins of his son's upbringing.

It’s a gentle, predictable film that doesn’t exactly put any steps wrong in its depiction of adolescence but Orley doesn’t quite do enough right for it to linger in the memory for longer than the credits.

To the credit of Orley’s screenplay and Davidson’s smiling-devil performance as the charming but toxic Zeke, we can understand how a vulnerable teen could mistake a loser for a legend — and we’re rooting like hell for the kid to realize that mistake before it’s too late.

This movie is an absolute must see. Especially for teenagers with its realistic viewing of “adolescence” I need a sequel to this amazing movie. Ten minutes in it became my new favourite movie immediately.

Eric Kohn 29 Jan 2019

As coming-of-age stories about wayward teens go, writer-director Jason Orley’s debut is a sturdy, endearing portrait of youth in revolt that takes few surprising turns. But the two actors sell their dynamic well enough to inject the story with palpable authenticity despite the familiar premise.

Griffin Gluck plays a teen who idolizes a dropout druggie (Pete Davidson). They hang together and have a good time, which eventually leads to more serious complications. This is Davidson's movie. Even as his character becomes more toxic, his loser charm is endearingly sweet and even a bit touching. Gluck is also commendable, as he struggles with being cool, while going against his own better judgment. This is ultimately a bromance with liberal accents of humor, but it's Davidson who makes the movie worth watching.
