The Wackness (2008)

Set in New York City in the sweltering summer, The Wackness tells the story of a troubled teenage drug dealer, who trades pot for therapy sessions with a drug-addled psychiatrist. Things get more complicated when he falls for one of his classmates, who just happens to be the doctor's daughter. This indie pic does a great job of taking a snapshot of a summer in Luke's life; finding the humor, the love, the pain, and agony of an 80s high school graduate's drug dealing days and nights. Josh Peck has certainly graduated from his Nickelodeon routes, jumped passed Nick at Night, and right into adult acting. I hope we see more of him in the future. Ben Kingsley, as always, takes his character and immerses himself in the role, this time as a defunct psychiatrist that has lost all semblance of ethical practice. The richness of this story made the 99 minutes feel much longer that its actual time frame, but in a good way. The direction was so wonderful, that it really feels like I experienced this three month journey with Luke.

The most impressive part about this movie is that Josh Peck is showing potential to be an actual actor. Which is great because everybody always said that other kid from Drake and Josh would break the mold, yet he's doing things like "Superhero Movie" which is still Nickelodeon humor. Also, I know I'm not the only one who wishes they could get high with Ben Kingsley. He's always a safe bet, but I thought he did really well in this.

Really enjoyed this film, good young talent in Thirlby and Peck, and Ben Kingsley goes another step to completely doing away with his image as Gandhi when he makes out with an Olsen twin. There's a couple of dodgy moments and Famke Jannsen really doesn't do anything but the 1994 soundtrack and the New York heatwave add an extra element to this coming-of-age yarn.

Why did I love this movie so much? I don't know. If you meet someone who doesn't like dogs, Bob Dylan or The Wackness, get the hell out of there.

I kept waiting for something tragic to happen but it never did. A pretty good movie though.
