It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, and this scattershot crowd-pleaser renders them both in such broad strokes that it seems as if Branagh can only imagine the Belfast of his youth as a brogue-accented blend of other movies like it.

Loved Catriona Balfe, the screenplay was nice, Jude Hill was adorable, but Judi Dench was miscast. Still loved the movie. And the Van Morrison song at the beginning was excellent.

Belfast is a black-and-white film, but it's beautifully shot. The dialogues are greatly written along side with perfect execution. Branagh described this as his most personal film, and we can see that. It's not easy to make a personal picture while itself being compelling, but Belfast is a great one. It seems that Belfast is somewhat personal to every one of us, too.
