Land and Freedom (1995)

David Carr is a British Communist who is unemployed. In 1936, when the Spanish Civil War begins, he decides to fight for the Republican side, a coalition of liberals, communists and anarchists, so he joins the POUM militia and witnesses firsthand the betrayal of the Spanish revolution by Stalin's followers and Moscow's orders.

one of those totally underated movies, that the shallow masses don't like. It inspired me to go to demonstrations and stand up for what I believe in,very moving movie.

A very good movie about one of the XX Century's key forgotten wars. Ken Loach is Britain's leading politically-motivated film director, a sort of contemporary Dickens who truly masters his art. However, sometimes he oversimplifies historical facts.

the film version of Orwells Homage to Catalonia, the betrayal of the revolution by stalinists hacks is shown in graphic detail. a wonderful, wonderful film showing that the traditional narrative of the Spanish Civil War that of democrats vs fascists is so much more complicated than that.
