Land and Freedom (1995)

Summer 1936: young unemployed communist David Carr leaves Liverpool to join the fight against fascism in Spain. He joins an international group of Militia-men and women, the POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista). After being wounded, he goes to Barcelona, where he joins another group of fighters.

A very good story about a Scouse volunteer in the Spanish Civil war and the internal conflicts that contributed to the downfall of the Second Republic.

Ken Loach's Trotskyite take on Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia." The best film portrayal of supposed revolutionaries falling out this side of "The Life of Brian.", but this time with devastating consequences in the real world.

Generally speaking, all renditions of the Internationale in films tend to be stirring moments. This one doubly so. The end message, despite all the horrors of Fascism and Stalinism, is one of hope for the future.

Excellent film avec bande son extra, remplie des chants revolutionnaires espagnoles. Une vision de la Guerre d'Espagne, celle du camp utopiste au sein des RÃ©publicains reprÃ©sentÃ© par une section etrangere affiliee au POUM. La querelle interne entre communistes et utopistes qui mena les RÃ©publicains Ã leur perte est bien rendue lors du debat sur la collectivisation des terres d'un village conquis: faut-il collectiviser donc mettre en place le systeme communiste puis gagner la guerre ou bien maintenir l'ordre et donner la prioritÃ© Ã la victoire militaire par une armÃ©e disciplinee, point de vue appuyÃ© par les soviÃ©tiques? Tout est dans ces quelques minutes... Certes le point de vue de Ken Loach est partisan mais il a le merite d'insister sur ce qui a fait la legende de cette guerre: la concretisation d'une utopie, le communisme reellement appliquÃ©. A cela, s'ajoute une jolie histoire d'amour et la nostalgie d'une epoque oÃ¹ changer le monde etait possible.

Best movie on the Spanish Civil War, one of the best war movies (OK, not your typical bang bang kind, but the action comes across as realistic), and very touching, intelligent, and meaningful.
