Brothers Beau, John and Digby Geste join the Foreign Legion, where they fall under the rule of tyrannical Sergeant Markoff. Beau and John are assigned to Fort Zinderneuf, where Markoff tries to break their spirit, aware of a dark family secret concerning a fabulous jewel one of them carries. As tensions rise, Arabs attack the fort and rivalries must be thrown aside in a desperate battle for life.

Another reason why 1939 was the pinnacle of American cinema.

The jewel heist is almost an afterthought to this movie...it's not really a movie where you ask "why" this is happening...but "what" is...and how well that's executed.

I was quite disappointed by this. It is a goodish movie, but I was expecting more. Maybe it is the fact that the story has been told so many times, but it was all a bit underwhelming. Maybe it was the la-di-da accents that put me off. Plot is OK, direction is OK. Acting is good, especially from Gary Cooper. Ray Millland wrecks another movie with his accent (Dial M for Murder was the other one where he irritated me).

Boys' Own stuff, gallant gestures, brothers in arms and lives laid down for the benefit of others. This film has them all. Strong performances from the three brothers but it is Donlevy who steals the show with the duplicitous Sergeant who plots and schemes to gain the jewel.

I'm finally interested in reading the novel after viewing this childhood favorite of mine as an adult. I'm hoping that the book will deepen my appreciation for the limited story that appears onscreen.
