Denis dispenses with most of Melville's hefty Christian symbolism in favor of the story's other great theme -- repressed homoerotic desire.

Majestic and grandiose, Claire Denis' amazingly abstract retelling of Herman Melville's Billy Budd is one of the great films of the 1990s. At once rigorous and tender, its rhythms are only matched by Eisenstein.

this is one of the few films i can re-watch without the expectation of certain scenes or of the ending. it is gorgeous and unreal, but it pierces. i think i may have to go watch it again, again.
