A Soldier's Story (1984)

In a rural town in Louisiana, a black Master Sergeant is found shot to death just outside the local Army Base. Military lawyer, Captain Davenport—also a black man—is sent from Washington to conduct an investigation. Facing an uncooperative chain of command and fearful black troops, Davenport must battle with deceit and prejudice in order to find out exactly who really did kill the Master Sergeant.

Fuller's writing and Caesar's performance, the power of this Soldier's Story is impressive.

My favorite movie. Great performances by some the actors, most of whom were not famous at the time--Denzel Washington, Robert Townshend, David Alan Grier, the late Larry Riley, Howard Rollins, and Adolph Ceaser. To story is interesting and addresses many issues. Racism. Divisions among black folks. Good stuff

This movie contained an all star cast. This movie took a hard look at race relations in the south as well as intraraciall relations among a variety of african americans. Watching this reminds me of how this world lost a great actor in Howard Rollins, to drugs and AIDS. He doesn't get enough credit for his body of work.
