A great movie. Paranoia. Jingoism. Corruption. Racism. It's the 50's at its best. Or... you know... the 2000s.

If you're an actor and want to see some great ensemble work, then look no further than this film from 1955. It features Spencer Tracy and Robert Ryan, plus Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Dean Jagger and the great Walter Brennan.

Since the Japanese internment camps are often ignored in US history, I was surprised to see a Hollywood production that addresses them even indirectly. The result is a great suspense film in which Spencer Tracy kicks the asses of those that try to bury past wrongdoings.

My new favorite movie. A parred-down Western noir about doing the right thing, about speaking up when others won't. Tracy is quiet dignity and strength, the rest of the cast are slow-burn menace. A simmering pot that doesn't explode, but erupts with a geyser of steam. They simply do not make them like this anymore.

This move doesn't get the credit that it deserves. It's decades ahead with its theme of racism and it use of martial arts. Spencer Tracy heads the perfect cast (all giving a brilliant performance) and John Sturges directs a masterpice of a thriller.
