Atlantic City (1944)

In 1915, Atlantic City is a sleepy seaside resort, but Brad Taylor, son of a small hotel and vaudeville house proprietor, has big plans: he thinks it can be "the playground of the world." Brad's wheeling and dealing proves remarkably successful in attracting big enterprises and big shows, but brings him little success in personal relationships. Full of nostalgic songs and acts, some with the original artists. Reissued in 1950 as "Atlantic City Honeymoon".

The performances from Lancaster and Sarandon highlight this effortlessly excellent film.

A movie about dreams. It makes you sad in a great way.A very human movie in fact.

What makes "Atlantic City" sweet -- and that's the word for it -- is the gentleness with which Lou handles his last chance at amounting to something, and the wisdom with which Sally handles Lou.

This was a pretty good movie starring Bob Lancaster, Burt's younger brother. AC is an interesting place that I went to in the early 60's with my parents sometimes, before the casinos. Gambling didn't save the town and it is opulent pleasure palaces surrounded by brutal crack slums now. Kind of like Vegas is turning into.
