In 1915, Atlantic City is a sleepy seaside resort, but Brad Taylor, son of a small hotel and vaudeville house proprietor, has big plans: he thinks it can be "the playground of the world." Brad's wheeling and dealing proves remarkably successful in attracting big enterprises and big shows, but brings him little success in personal relationships. Full of nostalgic songs and acts, some with the original artists. Reissued in 1950 as "Atlantic City Honeymoon".

Pair this up with The Swimmer and you have a compendium of Lancaster's depth over the years. Susan Sarandon is always phenomenal. Well worth watching again.

I did not realize until after I was done watching "Lacombe Lucien" that I'd rented two Louis Malle films in the same batch. This is not quite as epic, but it's an excellent story told against a fascinating backdrop: the transformation of Atlantic City following the legalization of gambling. Amidst wrecking balls and demolition charges, Lancaster is a small-time numbers runner who never made his mark and is visibly disappearing with the old city. With Susan Sarandon, he has a chance to live his dream, if only for a moment. Amazing performances all around; hard to believe this film doesn't stand out more prominently. And, for Will Ferrell fans: the appearance by Robert Goulet is silly, but golden.

Louis Malle delivers a wonderfull film about th old mafia Atlantic City slipping away. With Burt Lancaster in an amazing preformance as the old kind, ongoing fox named Lou.
