At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1991)

Martin and Hazel Quarrier are small-town fundamentalist missionaries sent to the jungles of South America to convert the Indians. Their remote mission was previously run by the Catholics, before the natives murdered them all. They are sent by the pompous Leslie Huben, who runs the missionary effort in the area but who seems more concerned about competing with his Catholic 'rivals' than in the Indians themselves. Hazel is terrified of the Indians while Martin is fascinated. Soon American pilot Lewis Moon joins the Indian tribe but is attracted by Leslie's young wife, Andy. Can the interaction of these characters and cultures, and the advancing bulldozers of civilization, avoid disaster?

This isn't the BEST Babenco. But it's worth watching.

Some of the most powerful and moving imagery imaginable. It's one of those films where you can see it as purely a movie or go further into it on lots of sublevels. It's long but that's part of what immerses you into it. I read the book first, all 937 pages of it, and thats even better than the film.

Well over three hours in length, and at best a masterpiece manque, At Play in the Fields of the Lord obviously will not enjoy a 20-week run. For all of its flaws, however, the passion and devotion of Hector Babenco's film comes through.

A solid work - so many strong points. The characters are weak and vulnerable. Their human characteristics are as off putting as they are realistic. There are moments of hope as well as disappointment. The scenery is spectacular and the soundtrack is eerie and highly evocative of the landscape, for all its classical instruments. The tensions between Catholic and Protestant are strong and interesting to watch play out - despite its Protestant perspective it seems to be pro Catholic, if indeed it can be said to be pro any sort of evangelistic activities. Anyways - good conflict movie. Going to check out The Mission next.

Darryl Hannah's best work so far in my opinion. This film primes to the core...it definately provides material for discussion. It steps on many a toe..It reminds of "The mission" with Jeremy Irons & Robert de Niro, where Christians blindly blunder into cultures they do not understand to impose their morals urgently on a non-suspecting people that live in harmony with nature. Brilliant acting by Aidan Quinn. Highly recommendable, although emotionally very draining.
