Many of the reviews of this film have decsribed it as a masterful depiction of a middle class family at deep unease with itself, but the plummy participants have little connection with the bourgeoisie as represented by George and Mildred or Terry and June - even their maid is posher than 90% of the population (nice though she is). For it's hard not to thump the ball of one's fist into one's open palm at the annoying nature of much of the goings on. Sure, the Ozu like pace and marvellous Scilly Isles setting lend the movie a gravitas of sorts and the dialogue, if presented in French or German, may have been mercifully free of the class connections that its presentation in English and setting in England make impossible to escape - but it's just too alien to how 99% of people in the UK today live their lives - frankly, too unimportant and too self-absorbed. All this said, not as irritating as the Lynx advert that kept on popping up while I was attempting to write this review - Flixster continues to be pretty abysmal.

This is definitely something more reserved for the 'higher-thinkers' or 'artists' amongst us. I appreciate what the director intended to do and what she has done, however for me personally, it didn't make a great film. I didn't really like any of the characters too much (except Edward and Rose) and when, towards the end of the film, I see a close up of one of the main characters and don't recognize her, there's a problem. I presume the constant static wide and long shots that capture the whole scene rather than cutting between different shots is supposed to represent some sort of fly on the wall Italian neorealism but I just didn't like it. At times it as great and really fueled the tension and awkwardness of what was happening, but at other times I almost screamed for closer shots. Not something I'd watch or even mention again.

An appalling waste of time. If people involved in this production were members of your friends or family and this was an end of year film school event, then you may sit through it and enjoy. Otherwise the only art in it is the way you have been fleeced of your money to watch it. There are no redeeming things to say except the actors can act, that's it.

Rather interesting piece which requires contemplation. I must sit down and do that one day.

A bit too understated and low budget. No music, lots of static shots, and very little narrative flow. A lot of poor weather and distance shots of the characters, backlit and underexposed. The rare closeups of the main characters were notable for their rarity. Just a tad too Cinema Verité for our taste. Eleanor was ready to give up on it after ten minutes, and fell asleep a couple of times too.
