Liverpool. 1947. Right after World War II, a star struck naive teenage girl joins a shabby theatre troupe in Liverpool. Alan Rickkman did wonderfully, as always. While it was a somewhat bizarre movie, it was very affecting. Hugh Grant was terrific as Meredith-- his sarcasm was sharp and his character was intriguing. The movie itself was very thought-provokng-- you'd probably be utterly bored by it just looking at surface events, but if you look deeper, it's really quite amazing. Stella was unremarkable but I suppose played her role well. My favorite part was Alan as Hook-- now that's something I'd want to see in real life! So, bottom line: It's pretty good, while bizarre and not very much at all a comedy. Quite confusing at parts, too. But if you're an AR fan, it's a must-see!

This movie. Ugh, it addresses a lot, but ends in an inarticulate way. But not just that, it leaves the audience hanging, not because it is sooooo good, but because it leaves you going "WTF?" I love how Newell did not allow Rickman to speak for the first 5 minutes he was onscreen; I never wanted to hear a man's voice so bad *wink* Goddamn, the only reason this movie is getting 3 stars is because of Rickman.

I'm still getting shivers over it... in a weird, disgusted way. It was uninteresting in the first hour and a half, but it picks up with the bombshell at the end. Although it did pain me to see Alan Rickman screaming so dejectedly when he found out the 'big secret.' I mean don't get me wrong: he's brilliant as always, but I don't think there was enough in the movie leading up to that moment. So to me, it seemed almost desperate. Despite all that, I think the novel should be awesome: the plot does have merit, disturbing it may be. I just don't think it works as well on film. All I could think of when the credits rolled was: "Well that was depressing..."

Odd but good. Alan is delightful and Hugh Grant for once plays out of character.

There is no finer acting in any film than this one. The cast is amazing. Even Hugh Grant proves that he is a STELLAR thespian.
