Almayer's Folly (2012)

In 1940s Malaysia, European merchant Kaspar Almayer is obsessed with finding a treasure to secure his daughter's future. His dreams fall victim to the pressure of his own greed, which becomes a torment. Compounding this is the oppressive English domination dominating the country – and that which brings ruin to the remote village where he lives.

Fervently passionate and formally meticulous, the latest stunning coup for a director who's made a career of repurposing archetypal storylines.

It is the richly evocative performances of Marion (aggressive yet enticing) and Merhar (wearing world-weariness like an aged suit) that cut deepest.

This film is well planned and executed. It moves with incredible quietness and fragility. There is an emotional depth to this piece. However, I had to watch this in three sittings, my personal feelings are that the film is long, slow, and arduous. It is an important addition to cinema and begins many important dialogues... but I had to try really hard to get through this film.

Michael Atkinson 06 Aug 2012

One of the year's most hypnotic and fascinating films.

Almayer's Folly is not friendly terrain to traverse; like some sinister version of Proust, it is a prolonged fever dream that ultimately yields madness.
