The movie surely owes something to Polanski, Cronenberg, et al., in its use of an apparently placid, upper-middle-class setting as the background for perverse horrors, but De Van's fearless, high-wire performance is uniquely its own.

I'm not sure if the film is brutally honest or exploiting a tragic disorder. I felt drained when I left the theatre; the more I thought about it, the less satisfied I was.

I saw this at the cinema and everybody walked out apart from me and my g/f. Deep down I have a strange love for this film.
