Good political drama about the president's nomination of Secretary of State. A great cast with Henry Fonda, Don Murray, Walter Pidgeon, and Charles Laughton (in his final film). The first hour was great, but near the middle it dragged a little bit, like when they focused on the board leader, but it was still good. Actually, I think it was probably Brig's wife that bugged me, I think she overacted, and was just too whiny. It had a good suspenseful ending, but it seemed a bit too much of a perfect timing. Anyway, overall, very good movie, check it out if you can. Burgess Meredith also gives a nice little cameo.

A tad melodramatic at times and a bit long, but "Advise and Consent" is still an absorbing, powerful and well shot political drama.

one of the best movies i've seen on the inner workings, treachery, and dubiousness of the US Senate. (seems like our politicians today should probably revisit this movie) The story itself could take place today rather than almost 50 years ago, with a narrative that seems out of todays headlines. Simply swap out communism for terrorism or even socialism and you have a timely, tense political thriller. The President of the US picks a controversial nominee as Secretary of State (Henry Fonda) who is seen as a dove, soft on communism and an appeaser. When it goes to sub-committee hearings, a conservative southern democrat challenges the nomination, bringing damaging facts of the nominees past to light. This sets into motion political backroom deals, arm twisting, backbiting, extortion and blackmail that eventually ends in a devastating conclusion. Throw in highly controversial subject matter for the 60s, an amazing ensemble cast, Hollywoods first depiction of a gay bar, and Betty White as a senator and you have an amazing political movie.

An intimate political drama that never lets up, nice performances bring you into the inner workings of Washington.

Superb casting and good cinematography. Even though there is not much the realm of storytelling, the film more accurately depicts the "routine" of the American political processes than most films I've seen on the subject.
