I thought I was going to see "The Best Man" (1964), but this movie was good too! Same issues of political deals tainted by vendettas and sex scandals. It was nice seeing it on the big screen in an independent movie theater, and Don Murray was there to give a live introduction!

Advise & Consent, Preminger
Bah. This story about a presidential nomination gone awry in the US Senate is long enough, is slow enough to have actually provided some insight into the world of politics. But instead, Preminger uses his slow boiling plot (complete with the bluntly foreshadowed twists) to tell the same old story about the moral deficit in American Politics. While Advise & Consent is better than Capra's sappy Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (Henry Fonda > Jimmy Stewart), it succeeds mostly in moving trite archetypes around the superficial Washington setting it creates. Oh and I hate the editing style used throughout which transitions between scenes by placing one shot on top of another. The current scene becomes transparent and as it vanishes the new scene comes to the fore. Preminger is surely trying to add layers to his flimsy movie, but it does not work.
superb casting. every one of the actors was used in the role most optimum to their style or presence. henry fonda, charles laughton & peter lawford all stood out immensely so in this satire about the fertile, endorsable & even forceful environment for corruption that the intricacies of the political system provide. otto preminger rocks the film world again!

Decent little flcik. Nothing to get in a tizzy about, and the ending is anti-climactic, since the idea of a bicurious senator in the 60's could not have been handled properly.

An epic battle of words and minds. A Secretary of State nominee is a presidential favourite, but a dark secret may cause some problems. Conflict arises from every orifice and there is some excellent razor sharp dialogue throughout. The first fifteen minutes is painfully slow as they introduce the players, but the movie gets interesting once Henry Fonda enters the picture. The film is tense and the plot complex, delivering twists throughout and engaging the viewer. Taking a lot of risks, the movie does spew a lot of political jargon and swaps the perspective on what character is in the spotlight. There are some dated aspects but a very well done political film that is still relevant to this day.
