The book is unreadable, but the movie is enjoyable, particularly Laughton's performance and the fact that the vice-president reminds one of Joe Biden...

Exceptional political drama, expert direction from Otto Preminger is a plus, and the cast is an amazing mix of great actors. Henry Fonda stands out, and of course Charles Laughton is amazing. He always is.

Uncommonly intelligent (though not for a Preminger film), this literate gem is the best film in the minor American genre of political process films. It balances Preminger's instincts for melodrama and sensationalism with his penchant for studied and elegant compositions and sober discourse (the only genuinely unlikable character is actually a leftist ideologue). More importantly, the film builds in suspense, insight, and warmth as it unfolds, totally justifying its robust running time.
