Mabel Longhetti, desperate and lonely, is married to a Los Angeles municipal construction worker, Nick. Increasingly unstable, especially in the company of others, she craves happiness, but her extremely volatile behavior convinces Nick that she poses a danger to their family and decides to commit her to an institution for six months. Alone with a trio of kids to raise on his own, he awaits her return, which holds more than a few surprises.

Uncomfortable, stressing, incredible! If a movie can do that to you with just psychollogical tension, it means there's some genius behind it. Great Cassavetes, and wonderful performances by Rowlands and Falk.

Gena Rowlands gives one of the greatest performances of all time. This is my favorite Cassavettes' film.

Easily one of, if not the, greatest film to ever depict a complete mental breakdown. The film has Gena Rowlands as a wife that is pushed completely over the edge and then committed. It then shows the extreme difficulties she has when re-intergrating herself back into the life she wasn't sane enough to live earlier. Gena Rowlands plays a character that is a little strange to begin with but we learn that it is this strangeness that makes her who she is. An emotionally powerful that I know anyone can easily relate to.
