A Shine of Rainbows (2009)

An orphaned boy named Tomás is adopted by Maire O'Donnell to live on a whimsical Irish isle filled with new friends, secret caves and a lost baby pup seal stranded on the coast. This is almost ridiculously syrupy sweet. Twee Ireland. check. Orphan boy. check. Spiritual undertones. check. Lifesaving baby seal. check. Lump in throat. check. (Don't judge me).

This is a really sweet film about an orphaned boy, played by John Bell. I like to find relatively unknown films, such as this, especially when they turn out to be something quite special.

There aren't many things in this movie I didn't love. I loved every single of the characters and the way they developed. I loved every technical aspect of it. I loved the performances. I loved the story. I loved County Donegal (the location in Ireland this movie was made). I loved that baby seal and wish I could hug it. I loved knowing what's it like being in a rainbow, not just seeing it. I pretty much loved everything. Start to end. It moved and touched me, the characters are just so real and have an inner glow - Tomás is a character that captured my heart, and that's not a frequent phenomenon. Certainly, it's not perfect, but for me, it came close to being. Call me overly sentimental if you want...
