À Nous la Liberté (1931)

In this classic French satire, Louis, a convict, escapes from prison and takes on legitimate work, making his way up in the business world. Eventually becoming the head of a successful factory, Louis opts to modernize his company with mechanical innovations. But when his friend Émile finally leaves jail years later and reunites with Louis, the past catches up with them. The two, worried about being apprehended by police, long to flee the confines of industry.

Finished this film this evening. A lot has been said about the similarity between this and City Lights. This one is much more life-affirming. And, if you've seen "The Artist" recently, that would have been good for preparing your attention span for this movie. The montage where the prisoner goes from escape, to selling records on the street, to selling records in a small, then large store, to making phonograph machines in a large factory, to owning many factories is a good example of what an effective, economical montage looks like. It's no wonder this 80 year old film is a classic.

Charlie Chaplin stole a lot from this film when he made Modern Times. This is a cautionary fable, that is also the most entertaining musical you'll ever see.

Not my favorite Clair film, but it has a a lot of hear with a few comedic moments.

Really fun film. Was the first non-english film to be nominated for an Academy Award. Also the basis for Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times". Director Rene Clair is a genius.
