49th Parallel (1941)

In the early days of World War II, a German U-boat is sunk in Canada's Hudson Bay. Hoping to evade capture, a small band of German soldiers led by commanding officer Lieutenant Hirth attempts to cross the border into the United States, which has not yet entered the war and is officially neutral. Along the way, the German soldiers encounter brave men such as a French-Canadian fur trapper, Johnnie, a leader of a Hutterite farming community, Peter, an author, Philip and a soldier, Andy Brock.

sure it's wartime propaganda but it's stylishly done and wonderful fun. we'd expect nothing less from the archers. a stranded u-boat crew tries to make their way to safety across canada after losing their vessel in hudson bay. anton walbrook and leslie howard are standouts in a cast of great character actors. olivier almost spoils it with a horrible french accent in early scenes but don't let it put u off the film; he won't be around for long. the canadian backdrop is a refreshing change from other WW2 era films.

Interesting war-time drama about a group of Nazis loose in Canada after their sub is sank, and their quest to avoid capture while interacting with fine Canadian fellows like Laurence Olivier, Leslie Howard, and Anton Walbrook. Wait a minute... Anyway, it's good.

Funny in that sort of way that old movies don't really mean to be (and some that they do)...The stereotypes about Canada are laughable, from the Eskimo village with the Frenchman with the terrible accent, to the prairie religious commune, to the parade with the native chief...Every stop along the way. My favourite bit is almost definitely the scenes in which the remaining Nazis encounter the author in BC. The author puts on a great performance with a dry with and sarcastic humour that would normally be associated with a Brit.

Interesting film. The way movies should be. Nice twist. forget about the Propaganda, they all are English speaking with English accents. Good against evil. Excellent performances. Olivier leaves to soon.

Yet another solid Powell & Pressburger film, fantastic cast with a great ending. Has a real Anti-Nazi theme, but as I always say "Hitler Was Wrong!"
