An amazing culmination of three years' work. Pennebaker captures David's alter ego brilliantly but the band don't come out of it well. I wish I'd been there at the time.

Bowie comes across tough not tender, a bit more Aladdin Sane than Ziggy Stardust (and not yet feeling the come-down of Diamond Dogs), in this 1973 cabaret hard-rock show. To me, there's something lacking in the performances which are all muscled up and ultimately a bit same-y (even Let's Spend the Night Together and White Light White Heat) which led me to sell the soundtrack years ago. Still, it's nice to know this is out there.

For the first time in 30 years, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars appear on the movie screen as Pennebaker intended. It's almost worth the wait.
