Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1983)

Hammersmith Odeon, London, July 3, 1973. British singer David Bowie performs his alter ego Ziggy Stardust for the very last time. A decadent show, a hallucinogenic collage of kitsch, pop irony and flamboyant excess: a musical symbiosis of feminine passion and masculine dominance that defines Bowie's art and the glam rock genre.

The moment where Bowie announces that this is "the last show that we'll ever do", to the screams and groans of the audience (most of whom assumed it was he, not Ziggy, who was retiring) remains utterly bracing.

Though this is little more than a concert caught on tape, it does have some amazing performances by Bowie.

Richard Harrington 15 Aug 2002

For the first time in 30 years, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars appear on the movie screen as Pennebaker intended. It's almost worth the wait.

This film is the ultimate in Rock and Roll showmanship. The end of the Ziggy Stardust era culminates with this, the last show of the tour. Although the sound quality isn't spectacular (We can blame D.A. Pennebaker for that) the greatness of the music still shines through. Perfect for any Bowie fan, or any fan of rock and or roll music.

Geoff Pevere 03 Oct 2002

Freed of the unflattering contemporary distractions offered by This Is Spinal Tap, Pennebaker's Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars captures Bowie at perhaps his purest, punkiest rock 'n' roll peak.
