This Zatoichi outing has even better direction than the last. There are stylish usages of the camera that make the fight scenes even more engaging, such as the overheard shot when Zatoichi takes on a gang. Usage of blood in the massacre makes it more gritty too. This is a solid entry in the series.

I love the humorous Zatoichi as much as the next guy but I LOVE it when he gets pissed off.

i think this one is my favorite of the Zatoichi films, after a while all the titles sound the same.

Zatoichi's back and this time he's bringing along some of the most memorable moments from the series so far. Flashing Sword took it's time in drawing me in. This was probably because of the, mostly, comical beginning. Surprisingly the film has the darkest ending and a genuinely unnerving final shot. Zatoichi really cuts loose, and the film seems to suggest he becomes some kind of demon of darkness. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that this is a favorite film of Park Chan-Wook, as it has many familiar scenes from his films. Most notably the underwater slicing scene and a single take fight sequence. Like Oldboy, the camera travels along parallel to the action (this time from above), with a seemingly endless swarm of attackers approaching the hero. This is a very memorable film for individual sequences, even if the story isn't as strong.

By far, the best from the series and my favorite! Here we can see the big heart of Ichi and his frightening fury to his enemies. Aside from that, make way for some laughs as he clowns around some more. The story is simple enough, helping out those in need, just like in the past films. Ichi visits a woman he's in debt to with his life and helps her family of Yakuza in their disputes. And the movie lives up to its title, Ichi displays lots of sword tricks, even cutting a katana in half. The scenes that I like best are at the ending. The Zatoichi series goes brutal on this one, shows a bloody massacre on-screen. And in the final fight, Ichi takes a different turn in fulfilling his revenge. The scenes are displayed in an eery kind of way, letting us feel the scary side of Ichi and what he can do with his sword. It's very well executed, by the end of the film, you feel frightened on what Ichi just did. Furthermore, the film also raises its bar, the cinematography became excellent. Lot's of amazing shots here and out.
