Since Young Winston attempts to be a kind of vest-pocket spectacle, there are also a couple of the battles in which he fought (a set-to in the Sudan, a Boer skirmish). Attenborough stages them with all the fury of a grade school recess.

This film is about the life of a young Winston Churchill. Based on his book written during his 'wilderness years', 'My Early Life'. It starts with him as a boy and catalogues his relationship with his father and mother, Lord and Lady Randolph Churchill. As he gets older he then joins the army and the film contains some fantastic battle scenes including the "last great cavalry charge of the Empire" and also his escape from the Boars. A magnificent film, but I am biased when it comes to all things Winston.

Attenborough's take on Churchill's book, My Early Life, which covers South African war campaign with some unconvincing battle and charge scenes, fine performances by Shaw and Bancroft of his parents and lot of speeches. The director would more fully perfect his biopic craft in Ghandi.

The opening is well confusing and the rest of the story is more about his parents than him. The actor does a really good job though, especially with the voice.
