If you happen to start watching ''Wolfen'' 85 minutes into the film, and you wonder what you've missed - just sit back and enjoy the finish, because the only thing you've missed, is about 80 minutes of night vision shots, a police detective who couldn't tell the difference between his ass and a hole in the ground, and some naked native americans jumping around making animal sounds. Frightening, indeed.

Michael Wadleigh directed two films and never worked again. But I would've liked him to, because with Wolfen, which was one of at least three wolf pictures to come out in 1981, he entrusts an acute otherworldly atmosphere to New York City that I can't recall ever seeing on screen before, from the Battery to the Bronx and the top of the Brooklyn Bridge looking down, you feel the ghosts possessing this ancient land. You'll understand when you see the movie.

Hum, well, excellent cinematography, great locations, great acting, interesting premise...too bad about the ending. A shame.

Great cast with good acting, but this movie was painfully boring. Give me "An American Werewolf in London" any day.
