Two young men, one rich, one middle class, both in love with the same woman, become US Air Corps fighter pilots and, eventually, heroic flying aces during World War I. Devoted best friends, their mutual love of the girl eventually threatens their bond. Meanwhile, a hometown girl who's the lovestruck lifelong next door neighbor of one of them pines away.

Not only a beautiful, entertaining crowd-pleaser.. but a truly brilliant film.

This film was technically adept and also contained some innovative stylistic shots. Having the full cooperation of the war department, the film has some really impressive and (at least to modern viewers) revealing looks at pilot training. In a lot of ways, the film is like one made in the 1950s. The people's lifestyle is not very different, the attitudes are not very different, the special effects are not fundamentally different. The main character especially could easily have been a star in the 50s and fit in perfectly.

I have to say that this was much better than I was expecting. It's a film driven by special effects, but it's forgivable because they have aged well (I can't imagine how amazing this must have been to moviegoers in 1927). In some ways, the effects then are more impressive than the CGI of today. For the close up aerial shots, both of the male leads took the plane into the air, turned on the camera in front of them, acted, and then landed the plane. I find that pretty impressive. Plus, I'm fairly certain Shia Labeouf wouldn't be able to pull that off.

I loved this old silent movie, was quite surreal in places (when people are drunk theres bubbles flating about) & had really good effects..

The first Best Picture Oscar winner, and quite an impressive one. The special effects and cinematography are outstanding for its time - Clara Bow is adorable, as well. This film demonstrates, yet again, that late silent films were, on average, significantly better than early talkies.
