No one should have to hear the named Cletis Tout said upwards of 50 times in one sitting.

I found this movie quite frustrating, it kept me engaged until the end but it could have been so much better with a tighter plot and better dialogue. There were some very witty moments, but they seemed to get a bit lost in the overall scheme of things.

A movie in which people celebrate great movies does not necessarily mean the movie itself is going to be good. It is pretty enjoyable fluff, but it tries to be too hip and clever for its own good. Christian Slater plays a crook who breaks out of prison, assumes the identify of someone (Cletis Tout) who happens to be a photographer who snapped images of a mob son killing a prostitute. He is captured by a hitman, Critical Mike (Tim Allen) who loves old movies. "Cletis" tells his tale of breaking out of jail and then needing to break back in another jail to dig up diamonds buried there which enthralls the hitman. Apparently Critical Mike is not all that critical. The story is fairly pedestrian and features things that people only do in movies such as communicate through carrier pigeons and speak in movie lines. Not a bad movie, but not as hip as it thinks it is.

There was a lot I liked in Cletis Tout, including the performances and the very audacity of details like the magic tricks and the carrier pigeons. But it seemed a shame that the writer and director, Chris Ver Wiel, took a perfectly sound story idea and complicated it into an exercise in style. Less is more.
