In the south of France, in a vast plain region called the Camargue, lives White Mane, a magnificent stallion and the leader of a herd of wild horses too proud to let themselves be broken by humans. Only Folco, a young fisherman, manages to tame him. A strong friendship grows between the boy and the horse, as the two go looking for the freedom that the world of men won't allow them.

a pretty good pairing of kids films. but since ive already sung the praises of the red balloon ill just talk about white mane. white mane, while it should have been edited down a little further (there were a few sequences that could have ended much sooner than they did like the horse fight and some of the chase sequences) has plenty of things going for it. the cinematography for one is very good with a few shots in particular that will stick with me. and the second thing is that the ending, while abrupt, is excellent. it is a difficult end but one that children, despite modern, popular thought, are just as equipped to handle if not more so.

Great fight scene between alpha horses for power, beautiful little boy, landscapes, realism. Whimsical soundtrack. Tragic.

Gorgeous film from the director of "The Red Balloon". This director has the amazing ability to tell a story with barely any dialogue. This is a great film which I recommend watching if you can find it.

Lamorisse films epic scenes in the marshes of the Petit Camargue with the small ponies that are said to roam there - and the result is a beautiful 'boys' own' story, though perhaps a modern childrens' story wouldn't have quite that ending. without sugarcoating it, this still remains a beautiful little story, filmed spectacularly.
