Deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia, where every man owns a gun and a moonshine still, abides living legend Jesco White, "the dancing outlaw". As a boy Jesco was in and out of reform school and the insane asylum. To keep him out of trouble, his daddy D-Ray taught him the art of mountain dancing, a frenzied version of tap dancing to wild country banjo music. After his father's death, crazy Jesco dons his father's tap shoes and takes his show on the road.

Very well acted and beautifully shot, I found it very difficult to actually enjoy this film because the subject matter was so numbingly grim. There were moments of dark comedy that I enjoyed and the performance of Hogg was, at times, captivating and chilling. The West Virginia setting was apocalyptic and utterly believable too. It just wasn't my kind of film, and I don't say that very often about something that has so many obvious qualities.

Loosely based on a real person, this unhinged drama gets increasingly lurid and grisly as it progresses. It's riveting, inventive filmmaking, but not remotely easy to watch.

Doesn't lack for flash, all desaturated colours, woozy slo-mo and scratchy vinyl recordings of Appalachian rockabilly; it could easily be mistaken for a campaign for a new line of Levis, perhaps called Rednecks or Psychosis. Still, the film is held together by a demented Gothic weirdness that derives in part from the nature of the story, in part from the full-throttle intensity of acting and direction. In the end, it may only be one of those Bundy or Dahmer biopics made by someone who knows how to wield a camera, but in its vision of low-rent, destructive, and eventually self-consuming celebrity, it's as close to an authentic B-picture as the UK Film Council have backed recently; it's also almost certainly a shoo-in as Nick Cave's favourite British feature of the year.
