Samuel Fuller's throat-grabbing exposé on American racism was misunderstood and withheld from release when it was made in the early eighties.Today, the notorious film is lauded for its daring metaphor and gripping pulp filmmaking. Kristy McNichol stars as a young actress who adopts a lost German shepherd, only to discover through a series of horrifying incidents that the dog has been trained to attack black people, and Paul Winfield plays the animal trainer who tries to cure him. I have yet to come across a Fuller film that I dislike. Pardon the pun, but a biting film about racism.

Proficient filmmaker Sam Fuller achieves an startling Hitchcockian thriller about the poisonous sentiment of racism. A canine is the seemingly peaceful being that encapsulates all the hate, prejudice and animosity among humans. A heartbreaking parable told with impeccable and hard-hitting style.

An intelligent, biting, and fundamental look at racism, this film succeeds largely due to the excellent handling of the eponymous dog. It's important throughout that the dog be seen as an animal rather than some twisted genius killing machine out of a Stephen King novel. Any more intelligent, the dog would be monster; any less would have made nearly all the sequences laughable, but the perfect balance is struck so that the animal can be seen as a victim of its circumstances. The film's racist themes are so basic that it would be possible for children to understand what is happening, but the audience is never pandered to. The only complaints to be filed are due to the constant and occasionally grating soundtrack and the somewhat rushed pace of the film, though it's hard to imagine adding something else useful to the proceedings.

3 people become intent on 'breaking' a dog trained to attack black people, as though they would be defeating human hate. It's overpowering; great music by Ennio Morricone and extreme close-ups like Leone, slow-motion sequences like DePalma's.
