Whisky Galore! (1949)

Whisky Galore! is a 1949 British comedy film produced by Ealing Studios, starring Basil Radford, Bruce Seton, Joan Greenwood and Gordon Jackson. It was the directorial debut of Alexander Mackendrick; the screenplay was by Compton Mackenzie, an adaptation of his 1947 novel Whisky Galore, and Angus MacPhail. The story—based on a true event, the running aground of the SS Politician—concerns a shipwreck off a fictional Scottish island, the inhabitants of which have run out of whisky because of wartime rationing. The islanders find out the ship is carrying 50,000 cases of whisky, some of which they salvage, against the opposition of the local Customs and Excise men.

Based on a true story (the sinking of the SS Politician which was renamed SS Cabinet Minister in the movie), this charming movie shows the resourcefulness of the 'west coasters' in Scotland in hiding the cargo from a jobsworth army captain. wish the title could be correctly spelled in this review though ... WHISKY GALORE not WhiskEy

Fun Ealing comedy about a shipwreck of whiskey off a remote scottish island and the comic battle to get it between Basil Radford's Home Guard captain acting on behalf of the customs and the booze-deprived locals. Not as laugh out loud as some other Ealing pics, but its warm hearted and the island scenery gives a good atmosphere.

This was one of my mother's favorite movies (she was in her mid-20's when it was originally exhibited). It has a very clever plot, is well-acted, and is very funny in a low-key way. I enjoyed this film, especially for its glimpse into the world of Scotland sixty years ago. Be warned, though, that the pace is quite slow by modern movie standards. You should be ready to relax and take it easy while watching. Won't be enjoyable to those craving lots of explosions and car chases (there is only one car chase).

The movie actually had me gasping for fear of losing whisky cases off the back of an escaping truck. Now that's what I call a good film. Also, watch for the lovely moral message at the end of the film, you may just enjoy the hilarity of their attempt.
