At last! An independent movie that isn't obnoxious about how independent it is. This is a simple story (drifter loses her dog) told exceptionally well. Easily my favorite little movie of 2008.

Proving why she is one of the most highly-regarded auteurs of current cinema, Kelly Reichardt's (OLD JOY) subtle storytelling technique uses a formal minimalist style to weave together a unique emotional and political road film. Wendy Carroll (Michelle Williams) is driving to Ketchikan, Alaska, in hopes of a summer of lucrative work at the Northwestern Fish cannery, and the start of a new life with her dog, Lucy. When her car breaks down in Oregon, however, the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart, and she confronts a series of increasingly dire economic decisions, with far-ranging repercussions for herself and Lucy. WENDY AND LUCY addresses issues of sympathy and generosity at the edges of American life, revealing the limits and depths of people?s duty to each other in tough times. Based on the short story "TRAIN CHOIR" by Jon Raymond.

This is what it's like to be poor....heartbreaking flick.

The story is told with a merciful lack of sentimentality, while Williams's performance seems totally natural. Added to that, Reichardt paints the smalltown scene with an attention to detail that a lot of other films miss.

Wendy and Lucy is the saddest and most beautiful film of 2008. Like Kelly Reichardt's previous film, Old Joy, it is a quiet, minimalistic film that has broad political and social implications: it says more about how we live and how much we need other people in trying times than just about any other American film of the year. Michelle Williams is truly amazing and, if the Oscars had any meaning, would win best actress in a heartbeat.
