An incredibly powerful film about the onset of the AIDS crisis in San Francisco and how the community banded together to deal with the crisis. Very well done and likely to require more than one Kleenex. Will be very moving for those that experienced this first hand and also very educational for those that did not. A movie everyone should see.

Heartfelt and horrific, this documentary offers a glimpse into the AIDS epidemic (over 15,000 killed) of the early 80s in San Francisco. It's an overwhelmingly sad piece of history, but the first-hand stories are a reminder of how important a strong and brave community can be in the face of terror.

We Were Here concentrates on the impressive way a collective of disenfranchised individuals came together to support one another in this time of crisis. In that respect, the title has dual meanings, referring to both the film's "Shoah"-like survivors' testimony and the fact that the gay community was there for one another at a time that government and medicine were slow to respond.

I normally dislike overly talking-head style docs but the pacing, editing and construction of this was really well done - and the story illuminating. A very worthwhile and engaging film.
