Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema (2006)

A chronological look at films by, for, or about gays and lesbians in the United States, from 1947 to 2005, Kenneth Anger's "Fireworks" to "Brokeback Mountain". Talking heads, anchored by critic and scholar B. Ruby Rich, are interspersed with an advancing timeline and with clips from two dozen films. The narrative groups the pictures around various firsts, movements, and triumphs: experimental films, indie films, sex on screen, outlaw culture and bad guys, lesbian lovers, films about AIDS and dying, emergence of romantic comedy, transgender films, films about diversity and various cultures, documentaries and then mainstream Hollywood drama. What might come next?

Obviously, this can't be as good as "The Celluloid Closet," but it's still entertaining.

Through interviews with gay and lesbian writers, producers, directors and actors and clips of films we're guided down the road of history of queer cinema to explore its roots and influences.

A great documentary with some fantastic interviews and really engaging stories about the history of Queer Cinema. Perfect for a primer, perfect for an enthusiast.

So I still liek the Celluloid Closet better to look at Queer Film, this documentary talks more about the place and role of Queer Film within mainstream Hollywood and mainstream America. It presents Queer Theory and Film Theory in a way most people can udnerstand and grasp. An interesting watch for sure...

I liked this for the exact reason that people in the film say gays like gay cinema - it is our story. Unfortunate that it is all about the US market but it's still insightful and informing - and a good place to find out about films to seek out and see. The segments that contain John Waters are priceless.
