Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema (2006)

A chronological look at films by, for, or about gays and lesbians in the United States, from 1947 to 2005, Kenneth Anger's "Fireworks" to "Brokeback Mountain". Talking heads, anchored by critic and scholar B. Ruby Rich, are interspersed with an advancing timeline and with clips from two dozen films. The narrative groups the pictures around various firsts, movements, and triumphs: experimental films, indie films, sex on screen, outlaw culture and bad guys, lesbian lovers, films about AIDS and dying, emergence of romantic comedy, transgender films, films about diversity and various cultures, documentaries and then mainstream Hollywood drama. What might come next?

Through interviews with gay and lesbian writers, producers, directors and actors and clips of films we're guided down the road of history of queer cinema to explore its roots and influences.

Quickly discusses defining movements in queer cinema on a time line, mostly American films: controversial scenes, sexual liberation or simply filming liberties. Ultimately gives lots of recommendations for me to track down, and speaks out to "young filmmakers" demanding unexplored areas to be filmed and released. My second "queer cinema" documentary; there should be one made every year since more changes are being made more rapidly and it will be interesting to see what the effect on the media is with the recent release of Bruno, which is what a lot of these GLBT advocates and members have been hinting at wanting.

It was such a quick overview I can't even believe it. It barely talked about anything for more than a minute and when it did it was the least interesting films. Give me more Kenneth Anger and Gus Van Sant next time. No My Own Private Idaho are you serious?! No Scorpio Rising?! Screw this. Decent for what it is, I suppose.

Obviously, this can't be as good as "The Celluloid Closet," but it's still entertaining.

The documentary The Celluloid Closet, which is also about the history of queer cinema, does it better than this one, however, this is still a good documentary by itself. And I am glad that I am familiar with most of the movies mentioned. The topic is interesting, and I really like and agree with what all of the interviewees are saying but I think this should have included or mentioned more foreign queer films.
