This movie chronicles the life and times of R. Crumb. Robert Crumb is the cartoonist/artist who drew Keep On Truckin', Fritz the Cat, and played a major pioneering role in the genesis of underground comix. Through interviews with his mother, two brothers, wife, ex-wife and ex-girlfriends, as well as selections from his vast quantity of graphic art, we are treated to a darkly comic ride through one man's subconscious mind.

Zwigoff not only presents a complex human being and the range of his art but also guides us through a profound and unsettling consideration of what it means to be an American artist. Essential viewing.

This is my favorite documentary! Fascinating personalities (though at times perverse) speak for themselves through minimalist-style film making. Gives such a deep and intimate look into not only Albert Crumb's life, but that of the family which helped to inspire and twist the distinctive style found within his comics. Whether you think he's an artist, or just a pervert, you can't help but be intrigued by his outrageous philosophy on life.

Ok this is probably one of my favorite movies, and I have never owned a decently working copy of it. Anyways if you like art,comics, and are fascinated with bizarre mentally disturbed people this is the movie for you. It is a documentary and the opinions and statements of Robert Crumb may not be the most politically correct but he certainly makes some good points. Plus the art he does is awesome

I will never forget seeing Crumb for the first (and second) time at the Downer Theater in Milwaukee with two of my most artsy-fartsy friends. It puts the "fun" in "dysfunction." Not for everyone, but everyone should see it. If it is about anything, other than Crumb himself, it is about three brothers who have been fated to grow up in the shallow end of the gene pool. It is a tragedy, too, but honest and deeply felt, and therefore more exhilerating than any happy-ending movie. Funny, sad, and yes, creepy, but intensely moving.

This documentary zig-zags between being an inspiring story about a man using his uncompromised talent to garner himself acclaim to becoming a stripped-down look at the disturbed psyche that produced the images he drew. The movie brings up interesting points, such as the fuzzy line between pornography and art and the paradox of a creative mind getting commercial success. The movie also definitely doesn't leave anything to the imagination - all of the characters are stripped down to their most bare states (it's not surprising that his sisters both declined interviews). Absolutely fascinating.
