A round of praise for a stunning film that dares to be everything to an audience that would do well for knowing the extraordinary circumstances of women subject to the implacableness of certain oppressive traditions in 1930s India.

captivating cinematography, music was fantastic and added to the overall beauty and to the calm, flowing mood of the film, story was predictable but well written

Moving and beautifully shot. Lisa Ray is fantastic in this movie. Shot simultaneously in two languages...can't decide which version I like better.

A great film regarding forbidden love, morning ones lost loves and how the widows are viewed by the rest of ones community. This is Mehta's masterpiece.
